During the trip to Scotland Highlands, my friends and I rented a car from Glasgow and drove up to the north of Scotland. Even though my Australian driver license is expired and without having my Malaysian driver license with me, I still drive on the road of Scotland (well, they do most of the driving, I only drove on our trip back to Paisley).

While we were at the Scotland Highlands, we stayed mostly at youth hostels or backpacker hostels. Sometimes it depends on one's luck to stay in the youth hostels or backpacker hostels. Some of the hostels are clean with good management; the tenants are very considerate too. But some other times it can be old, tatty, with mixed, inconsiderate tenants.

Generally the youth hostels and backpacker hostels in the UK and Europe are very well managed and maintained due to the common practice of backpacking. The price is well-acceptable too. You can either book in advance online or phone, or walk in to find a bed on the day.

We didn't make any advance booking for this trip to the highlands. We were traveling with our own pace and deciding during the journey which town to stay over night.

When we arrived at Inverness, it was raining cats and dogs. We had to walk in the rain to find an accommodation. Luckily we found one which is recommended by the travel information booklet. This backpacker hostel is at High Street, on the second floor, with Chinese Take-Away, Fish and Chip and Kebab shop on the ground floor, also a Zen-bar Restaurant on the first floor.

I felt a bit strange when I climbed up the stairs to the hostel. The stairs are covered by dark, flourish red carpet. The staircase is dark and smells old. It felt like going to the 'red light district'.

The surprise came when we step into the hostel. Basically second and third floors are equipped with bedrooms, dome, showers, toilets and common room. Clean and tidy. What's more astonishing is all the walls are decorated with hand-painted murals. Some are comics; some are cultural painting, they are all very creative and colourful.

In additions, all the rooms are named by countries, with the characteristic painting of that particular country on the door.

A good choice and luck with accommodation for the night in Inverness.

(SCOTLAND HIGHLANDS)

CHINESE TAKE-AWAYFISH AND CHIPKEBAB SHOP

kiatnee wrote on Oct 7, '05, edited on Oct 8, '05
